Governor Code of Conduct

Welcome to our Governors section. We hope this helps you to get to know us, our role and responsibilities.

The Governing Body appoints the Headteacher and delegates the responsibility for the day to day running of the school to the Headteacher.  Individual Governors have no power as such and cannot act or speak on behalf of the Governing Body unless they have had the power delegated to them.

Who are the Governors?

The Governors are made up of five Governor Types who represent the ‘stakeholders’ of the school.

  • Partnership
  • Parents
  • The Local Authority
  • Staff
  • Co-opted

This range of people is intended to provide a broad and balanced selection of viewpoints and to represent each sector of Northfleet Technology College’s society. No Governors is a ‘delegate’ of their group. The term of office is four years and they can be re-elected for further terms depending on the rulings for the type of Governor they are.

The Structure of the Governing Body

Besides the Full Governing Body we have four Sub Groups:

  • Planning
  • Finance & HR
  • Student Learning
  • Student Welfare

Each Sub Group meets approximately three times a year, as a minimum.  We also have a number of Governor Panels dealing with discipline, appeals and staff issues.

What Qualifications are Needed?

No formal qualifications are required, just a desire to put experience and life skills to good use.  Governors are people with an interest in education and a belief in working together to improve the outcomes for our students.  They are people who have a few hours spares each month, and enjoy being part of a team.

What about Training?

New governors are given a full induction pack about their role and are invited to attend an induction training course run by the Local Authority Governor Support Department.  Further training is available locally to fit in with specific roles of governors.

It Seems like an awful lot of work – why do it?

Most people find it very rewarding to be part of the school team, working in partnership with staff and the local community to secure the best possible education of the students at Northfleet Technology College.

All new Governors are given a warm welcome and soon find themselves playing an important role in the life of our school. Vacancies of parent governors are advertised in the school newsletter.

Please not that for the protection of our students, all governors appointments are subject to a vetting process and identity check.
