Appeals Process

Remember, if you appeal then your final grade can go down as well as up.


How does the appeal process work?

There are three stages to the formal appeals process. The first is an internal school check that we followed our processes and didn’t make a clerical error (this is called a Centre Review). The second is an appeal to the relevant exam board to review the evidence we used and decide if they agree the grade we awarded. The final option is you can apply to Ofqual, the exam regulator, to review the whole process. However, you need to follow through each stage before you can move onto the next.

It is also very important to remember grades can go down as well as up, so its a good idea to request the marks or grades awarded for each piece of evidence in a particular subject before you submit an appeal. This way you can see if it is likely to be successful. You can do this by completing the form at the very bottom of this page.

If you decide to progress with an appeal then here are the steps to follow:

Stage 1: Centre Review

  • Download and complete this form.
  • Make sure you have read the information on page 1 before you proceed.
  • Complete page 2 with as much information as possible.
  • Email the form to us at (you can also contact us on this address if you need any help).
  • It must be signed by the student (though this can be electronic if it is emailed back to us from their own email account).
  • We will then respond within 10 working days by completing page 3 to show the outcome.

Stage 2: Appeal to the Awarding Organisation

  • If you wish to progress to the next level of appeal, you need to complete page 4 and 5 of the document.
  • Again, this must be signed by the student (or emailed from their own account).
  • You must also complete any relevant boxes to explain why you feel the grade awarded is not correct.
  • This could be one or more of the following reasons:
    1. You believe the school failed to do something stated in our TAG Policy, and this caused you to be given the wrong grade.
    2. You believe the exam board made an administrative error.
    3. You believe there was an unreasonable exercise of ‘academic judgement’ (see below), either in the selection of the evidence used or the determination of the grade from the selected evidence.
  • The explanation of why you want to appeal does not need to be complex. It can be either:
    1. What evidence you consider should have been included, or excluded, and why you think it was unreasonable to exclude or include it.
    2. Why you consider the grade awarded from the evidence was unreasonable. For example, it did not reflect the standard shown by that evidence.
  • Once complete, please email to We will then submit this appeal to the exam board on your behalf, along with the evidence and marks we used to decide the grade.
  • We will contact you with the response from the exam board as soon as we receive it.

Stage 3: Refer the appeal to Ofqual

If you still disagree with the grade awarded by the exam board, you can refer the issue to Ofqual’s Exam Procedures Review Service (EPRS). The exam board will have the final say unless EPRS finds it’s made an error. You can find more information on this step via this link.

What does ‘Academic Judgement’ mean?

An unreasonable exercise of Academic Judgement is defined in the Ofqual appeals process as where the schools judgement as to either:

  1. the evidence which should be used to determine a grade was unreasonable.
  2. the grade indicated by the evidence it selected was unreasonable.

It is only where the decision made by the school represents an unreasonable application of academic judgement that the grade awarded will be incorrect. For example, a decision to award a grade 4 will not be unreasonable where the decision maker for the appeal considers the evidence would support either a grade 4 or a grade 5. Both would be reasonable and therefore neither would be unreasonable.

What are the important dates for an appeal?

Priority Appeals Window

  • 10 August to 16 August: student requests centre review
  • 10 August to 20 August: centre conducts centre review
  • 11 August to 23 August: centre submits appeal to exam board
  • 7 September: Deadline for exam board to respond to appeal

Non-priority Appeals Window

  • 10 August to 3 September: student requests centre review
  • 10 August to 10 September: centre conducts centre review
  • 11 August to 17 September: centre submits appeal to exam board
  • End of October: Deadline for exam board to respond to appeal

Can I resit my exam in the Autumn?

Yes, there is a window in the autumn for students to resit teams. If you wish to do this then do contact us to discuss further.
