Understanding Literacy & Maths Data
A solid grounding in the basics of literacy and numeracy are a gateway to future educational success. We regularly use standardised test to give a reading, spelling and numeracy age in Y7 to Y9 (and in later years for some students). You will find this when looking up assessments on the Arbor App.
These ages will appear in a format like 12:03 (which would mean 12 years and 3 months). This age is indicating he is currently working at the expected standard for that age. If appropriate, students with an age below their chronological age will receive targeted interventions from our dedicated team of support staff to help them close the gap.
You may also see a range of other assessment scores that are linked to these reading and numeracy ages. For reading, these include:
- Analysis (out of 9) - This is the breaking down of text into smaller parts to understand it better.
- Inference (out of 16) - This is the process of drawing a conclusion based on evidence and reasoning, often by “reading between the lines” to understand what is not explicitly stated.
- Vocabulary (out of 15) - This is the knowledge of words and their meaning.
- Literal Comprehension (out of 20) - This is the understanding of text, meaning to grasp the facts, details, and information that is explicitly stated.
These finer assessments help our Intervention Team to understand where each student need extra support when appropriate.
