Key Stage 3 - Physical Education
WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THIS SUBJECT?
PE is a subject within the National Curriculum and is therefore a compulsory area of study for all students. The main function of the subject is to develop physical skills, a knowledge of health and fitness as well as evaluative skills in performance.
PE involves students in the continuous process of skill acquisition, implementation, evaluation and knowledge of Health and Fitness in all areas of activity. The greatest emphasis is on the actual performance aspect of the subject, this will happen against a backdrop of discussion, analysis and co-operation.
PE encompasses a wide range of activities and presents the opportunity to develop many technical skills, co-ordination, dexterity, muscular strength and stamina. Implicit in these activities are opportunities to lead and be led, to show initiative, to learn and conform to rules, to recognise the strengths and limitations of others and to appreciate the meaning of individual and collaborative endeavour.
PE aims to provide all students with successful and enjoyable experiences which will encourage a lifelong interest in physical activity, and to promote the benefits of health and exercise.

HOW IS IT ASSESSED?
Physical Education is assessed through practical assessment of students physical abilities as well as their coaching standards.
WHERE DOES THIS TAKE ME?
This can take you forward to a BTEC Level 2 in Sports, Coaching and Fitness. From there you can progress onto a BTEC Level 3 in sports, coaching and and join our Sports Academy.
Key Stage 4 – BTEC Sport
The Sports course will give an overview of the sporting world looking into the theory behind sports performance as well as the performance itself.
WHAT WILL I LEARN ON THIS COURSE?
Over the course of two years you will study a variety of different units of work which will give you a broad understanding of the Sports industry.
These units are and look into areas such as:
- Fitness for Sport and Exercise – this unit looks at training methods, training principles and different fitness tests and how to use this data.
- Practical Sports Performance – this unit looks at the rules, regulations and scoring systems of different sports where you analysis performance or performers and officials.
- The Sports Performer in Action – this unit looks at the short-term and long-term effects on the bodies different systems such and how energy systems play an important role.
- Training for Personal Fitness – this unit looks at training the body and how the body develops through training and planning and what barriers there are to exercise.
HOW IS THIS QUALIFICATION TAUGHT AND ASSESSED?
The qualification for BTEC is assessed via coursework and an online exam that can be retaken if need be.
WHAT QUALIFICATION WILL I ACHIEVE?
You will achieve a BTEC Level 2 Award in Sport.
WHERE WILL THIS QUALIFICATION TAKE ME?
Following completion of the Sport Studies course, successful students would be able to enter initial employment, at a junior level, in areas such as Leisure and Tourism or the Fitness industry. If you continue to study to Advanced Level or Degree Level there is possible employment in Education, Physiotherapy, Sport Psychology, Sports Management and Fitness Instruction to name a few.
This course leads on perfectly to any of the three BTEC National courses in Sport, which are offered at Sixth Form level (we offer one at NTC), or a range of other Level 3 Sport based courses such as A Level Physical Education.
