Key Stage 3

WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THIS SUBJECT?

In KS3, all lessons follow a Mastery of Mathematics which is designed to embed the skills gained at KS2 and build on them. The Mastery of Mathematics lessons are based on the program designed by the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics.

WHAT KNOWLEDGE IS COVERED?

The following areas are covered during the Key Stage both in mathematics lessons and across the curriculum:

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Statistics & Probability
  • Ratio

HOW IS IT ASSESSED?

Students are assessed on an on going basis.  Different assessment styles such as peer assessment, self assessment and teacher assessments are used to track the progress of students.  Intervention sessions are then arranged to assist students who do not make the right progress.  There are also termly summative tests to help track the students memory and application skills.

WHERE DOES THIS TAKE ME?

The KS3 Mathematics curriculum is planned to help prepare students for GCSE Maths. It also helps to develop the basic skills necessary to enable them go onto various career paths including apprenticeships or to study Maths at KS5.  Northfleet Technology College offers the International Baccalaureate at standard level to its sixth form students.

Key Stage 4

WHAT WILL I LEARN ON THIS COURSE?

In year 11 all students are entered for the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics 9-1 examination. Our linear specification is an engaging way to teach students who respond well to a holistic approach to learning Mathematics.  Full details of the courses are available on the Edexcel website.

WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT THIS APPROACH?

The qualification in Mathematics encourages students to develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards, Mathematics and to recognise the importance of Mathematics in their own lives and to society. These qualifications prepare students to make informed decisions about the use of technology, the management of money, further learning opportunities and career choices.

HOW IS THIS QUALIFICATION TAUGHT AND ASSESSED?

GCSE Mathematics:

Three written papers: each contributes 33.3%  of the final grade – each 1.5 hours long. 1 Non-Calculator and 2 Calculator Papers

  • Foundation Tier grades 1-5
  • Higher Tier grades 3-9

WHAT QUALIFICATION WILL I ACHIEVE?

A GCSE in Mathematics

WHERE WILL THIS QUALIFICATION TAKE ME?

This GCSE in Mathematics provides progression to Level 3 qualifications in numerate disciplines, such as:

  • IB Mathematics at higher or standard level
  • GCE Mathematics
  • GCE Further Mathematics
  • GCEs in the Science subjects
  • GCE Geography
  • other qualifications which require mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding.

This qualification also supports further training and employment where mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding are desirable.
