Subject Title: BTEC Engineering

BTEC or AS/ A2 levels: BTEC Level 3 National
Extended Certificate in Engineering – equivalent to 1 A levels

Grade ranges: A-E  (Distinction, Merit, Pass)

Exam Board: Edexcel

Method of assessment:  Units are assessed by a 2 hour written exam, by a supervised assessment design task, both marked by the exam board, and by continuous assessed, mainly assignment based.

Length of course: 2 years

Information about the course to include units covered:

In this course you will follow a variety of units addressing both the fundamentals of working in an engineering workplace and taster units covering the many disciplines of Engineering.  Units are:

  • Engineering Principles – mainly mathematics and engineering theory
  • Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team – exploring how processes are undertaken by teams to create engineered products (None practical)
  • Engineering Product Design and Manufacture – exploring engineering product design and manufacturing processes (None practical)
  • One of the following:
  • Electronic Devices and Circuits – exploring the operation of electronic devices and their uses in circuits through simulation and practical exercises to build and test physical analogue and digital circuits (Approximately 40% practical work)
  • Computer Aided Design in Engineering – developing two-dimensional (2D) detailed drawings and three-dimensional (3D) models using a computer aided design (CAD) system (Computer based work)

Entry requirements: BTEC Engineering Level 2 Pass (or higher)/ DT qualification grade C or higher, a grade 4 or higher in GCSE Mathematics with a good understanding of how to use GCSE mathematics is essential.

Possible exit routes: Engineering apprentiships, University courses in Electrical/Mechanical/structural Engineering, computer aided manufacture.
